Non-Western Blog    The Edo Period (1603-1867) was the final era of the traditional Japanese Government. Tokugawa Ieyasu used shoguns for over 250 to establish peace in Japan. This also helped a new merchant class to form and urbanization to flourish.   This woodblock print is  Under the Wave of Kanagawa  by   Katsushika Hokusai. This woodblock print shows Mount Fuji as the mountain shown behind the waves. I really liked the different shades of blue that were used in the waves to give the woodblock print dimension. This woodblock print also shows a terrible scene as we see boats that are about to get crushed by the wave. Even with the terrible scene that is shown in this woodblock print I still think that this is beautiful.  This painting is  Rough Waves  by Ogata Kōrin. Many artist have tried to paint these waves and capture the unique image that swelling waves have. Kōrin has one of the best paintings of swelling waves. He was able to capture the tips of the waves that look like foam

The Impact of WWII on the Mid Modern Era Hitting the Beach  by Tom Lee Painted in 1944 Location: Depiction of Peleliu The Price by Tom Lee Painted in 1944 Location: Depiction of  Peleliu   Tom Lea was a war correspondent for Life Magazine. He originally went to school at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1940 he took a job at Life Magazine and covered the war from 1941-1946. He would be put in places where he had a direct view of what the war looked like then he would paint what he saw. Some of his paintings are even hung in the Pentagon to be used as a reminder of how awful war is.                                                                         Elements Two concepts that are greatly used in these paintings are color and contrast. Tom uses a lot of greens and darker colors to show how the bad the conditions were at that time. In The Price  the red is the first thing that you see when you look at the painting. He also uses curves and lines to make the paintings look as if the peo

Romantic Era

Imperialism vs Post Imperialism Imperialism This is  Pont Boieldieu in Rouen, Rainy Weather by Camille Pissarro. Pissarro created this artwork based on what could be seen from the window in the hotel. Pissarro had to stay indoors during the colder months due to some health issues so he took to making artwork based on what he could see from his hotel room window. I really like this painting compared to the painting by Monet because it is a lot clearer. The painting by Monet looks like it a painting done during a really foggy day and it is harder to see what is portraited in the painting done by Monet. I also really like how Pissarro put a lot of detail into his painting to make his painting look realistic.    This painting is Impression, Sunrise by Claude Monet. Monet was born in Paris, France but he moved to the beaches in Normandy which sparked his passion for painting what he saw in the ocean. This painting is what he saw from his window one morning. Baroque Blog     The Baroque era was time where paintings depicted a lot of real life objects and people. The paintings in this period also used darker colors. The Baroque era lasted from 1600-1750.  This painting is  Fruit and Insects  by Rachel Ruysch. Rachel lived in Amsterdam so she was heavily influence by royalty. Her paintings were given to Medici in Italy and bought by wealthy families that lived in England.  I like how much detail was put into this painting. I also liked how she was able to make the fruit and insects in this painting look like they do in real life. She was able to use shading to create the different shades of the fruit and shadowing to create the shadows under the butterfly and lizard. I think this painting is really interesting but I don't think I would ever have this painting in my house.                                                                  References                          Beranek, Dr. S. \ Mona Lisa Leonardo De Vinci had a huge impact on the art created during the Italian Renaissance. This painting is the Mona Lisa  where he used shading to create a realistic painting of a woman. This woman is believed to be Madam Lisa Giocondo who was the wife of a wealthy Florentine. This painting was painted sometime between 1503-1519. Leonardo was able to make the background look blurred which make the woman stand out even more.  Leonardo used shading, and blurring to make this painting look natural. He was able to blur the  background behind the woman depicted in his painting so that she would stand out in his painting. He was also able to use shading to make her look just like she did in real life.    I would have this painting in my house because I think it is really unique and have always loved this painting. This is one of the most talked about and well known paintings and it has been used in a lot of movies. I would love to be able to go to the Louvre Museum in Paris and be a

Sunset Aglow  Bob Ross is a famous painter who teaches us how to paint on is own television show. His full name is Robert Norman Ross. His show is called The Joy of Painting  that was featured on PBS. He featured this painting on Season 26 episode 12 of his show. His show was on the air for 11 years.  I chose this painting because I have always loved realistic nature paintings. I like to be able to imagine what that place looks like and imagine that I am there in real life. Another reason that I like Bob Ross is because my brother used to watch his videos and follow along with what he was doing.  This art piece is relaxing because of the color that the piece has. Bob uses warm colors to make this piece calm and relaxing. He also used tone to make the mountains look like they are far away. I really like how he used these techniques because he was able to make the painting look just like it would if you were looking at this scene. I would have this painting in my house.

Hello! My name is Claire Montague and I am a sophomore at UAF working towards a degree in Elementary Education. I have always had the desire to be a teacher and be able to teach young children and watch them learn and grow. I have recently started a job as a Pre-K teacher at one of the childcare centers in my area and I really enjoy being able to watch my kids learn new things.  I have lived in Alaska for the past 9 years, but have also lived in North Carolina, Hawaii, and Germany.  I have learned to love Alaska even though its way colder than I would like in the winter. My favorite things to do is going camping in my parents RV, spending time with family and friends, and baking.  I am not a artist, but I do enjoy looking at art. My brother and grandparents are really good at art and I love to look at all of the paintings, and sculptures that they make. I also really like to go to art museums and look at all the different kinds of art that they have on display. One of the art museums
